Reproduction

Eggs are laid on a firm surface (eg plant leaf), the eggs (and hatched fry) are cared for mostly by the female. Rarely bred successfully, requires soft acid water for spawning.

 

Feeding

Omnivorous. Prefers small live or frozen foods.

 

Additional Comments

Adult male Checkerboards are very attractive with their long finnage and green spangles. Rarely bred, most aquarium stock is wild-caught from South America. An excellent fish for planted tanks containing small species. Will eat small fish if given the opportunity.
