If you are looking for a nice looking fish to add into your Lake Malawi community aquarium, Peacock Cichlid is definitely a good choice. They are relatively peaceful and hardy to care for.  Like most of species of African Cichlid, the Blue Neon Peacock lives in small groups of a singe male with multiple females. Features of Peacock Cichlids - Blue Neon:

  • Males develop a metallic blue color on their face, dorsal and anal fins
  • Peacock cichlids are fast swimmers and require plenty of open space in the bottom and mid-sections of the tank
  • They’re active during the day and rest during the night
  • Males will get to be about 15cm in length and females will be a little smaller

The Best Aquarium Size for Cichlid:

The minimum tank size for peacock cichlids is 100L. A big tank is very necessary for a community of four to six peacock cichlids. The tank size is going to affect fish lifespan, the bigger is always the better. Peacock cichlids are active swimmers that will use all the tank space you provide. The tank should have more horizontal than vertical space.

Tank Mate Compatibility:

Blue Neon Peacock Cichlids make a good addition to most any community Lake Malawi aquarium, as they will generally get along with most other Lake Malawi species. However, they are peaceful enough to keep with similar species providing the aquarium is large enough to provide multiple territories for each group of fish. Breeding males will also display increased levels of aggression.

Great tank mates for Cichlid include:

Feeding :

Blue Neon Peacock cichlids are carnivores and should be fed a diet that contains a good amount of protein. A good mix of plankton based flakes and commercially prepared along with live (or frozen) brine shrimp or blood worms will provide these fish with a healthy diet. Such foods will help bring out their bright blue and yellow colors. Live insects that sink to the bottom are also good, as are live or frozen cichlid food, brine shrimp and Daphnia, or common water fleas.

These tropical fish will need warmer water, so a heater is required. A thermometer is also recommended to ensure the temperature is correct.

Lighting

Artificial lighting is recommended, cichlids may like a system that dims or can be customized to match their native habitat.

Plants for Cichlid

Live plants are a great idea. You should choose only hardy plants because peacock cichlids have a habit of digging and disturbing foliage.
