Pelvicachromis silviae is a rare and visually captivating West African dwarf cichlid, admired for its refined coloration and relatively peaceful disposition. Originating from slow-moving forest streams, this species exhibits complex social and breeding behaviours, making it highly desirable among experienced aquarists. Its manageable size and striking appearance allow it to function as a focal point in carefully structured community aquariums.
Subtle golden to beige body with iridescent blue and violet highlights
Distinctive red to pink belly coloration, especially in breeding females
Adult size typically ranges from 7–9 cm
Peaceful to moderately territorial, particularly during spawning
Strong pair bonding and parental care behaviours
Lifespan of 5–8 years under optimal conditions
A minimum aquarium volume of 80 litres is suitable for a bonded pair. For community setups or multiple pairs, 120 litres or more is recommended to provide sufficient territory and reduce aggression. A tank length of at least 80 cm ensures adequate space for natural movement and territorial boundaries.
Ideal companions are peaceful species that occupy different water levels and do not compete for territory:
Congo Tetra
Ember Tetra
Corydoras Catfish
Hatchetfish
Pencilfish
Pelvicachromis silviae is omnivorous, requiring a varied and balanced diet. High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes should form the staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Occasional vegetable matter, including spirulina-based foods, supports digestion and overall health. Feeding small, consistent portions helps maintain water quality.
Efficient yet gentle filtration is essential, maintaining clean and stable water conditions without excessive current. Sponge filters or low-flow external filters are ideal.
Live plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, and Cryptocoryne provide shelter and visual barriers, helping reduce stress and aggression. Dense planting is beneficial.
Moderate lighting is recommended, mimicking their natural shaded habitats and enhancing coloration without causing stress.
Maintain stable temperatures between 24–27 °C using a reliable heater with accurate thermostat control.
Fine sand substrate is preferred, allowing natural digging and spawning behaviour while preventing injury.
Incorporate caves, driftwood, and rock structures to create secure breeding sites and territorial boundaries, while maintaining open areas for swimming.
