• Maximum size: approximately 15–18 cm in length
• Lifespan: 8–12 years with proper aquarium care
• Temperament: peaceful and social; ideal for community Malawi cichlid tanks
• Colouration: metallic silver to bronze body with subtle dark facial markings; males may display brighter hues
• Behaviour: mid- to upper-level swimmer; males establish small open-water territories, while females form groups

This species coexists well with other peaceful Lake Malawi cichlids that occupy similar or lower water levels. Suitable tank mates include:
• Other Placidochromis species
• Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara species)
• Calm Copadichromis species
• Non-aggressive mbuna species
Avoid highly territorial or aggressive cichlids to ensure a harmonious aquarium.
An omnivorous species, Placidochromis phenochilus thrives on a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or krill. Including spirulina-based foods or blanched vegetables helps maintain colour vibrancy and digestive health. Feed small portions 1–2 times daily.

Aquarium Filtration
Strong filtration with biological media is essential to maintain water clarity and stable conditions. Canister filters or sponge filters are recommended.

Aquarium Plants
Use hardy plants attached to rocks if desired, as digging may dislodge rooted plants. Aquarium plants such as anubias planted on lava rock or wood are great choices.

Aquarium Lighting
Moderate lighting highlights the metallic body tones without causing stress. We recommend Zetlight LED aquarium lighting that allows for easy adjustability in a full range of spectrums.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain consistent temperatures of 24–27°C with a reliable heater and thermometer.
Aquarium Substrate
Fine sand or smooth gravel is ideal, supporting natural foraging and minimal injury
Aquarium Decorations
Arrange rocks to create open swimming areas, small caves, and perches for male display. Replicating Lake Malawi’s rocky-sandy habitat encourages natural behaviour and social interactions.
