Red King Kong Shrimp
The Red King Kong Shrimp (Caridina sp.) is a striking freshwater dwarf shrimp prized in the aquarium hobby for its vivid red coloration and dramatic patterning. Originating from specialized breeding programs in Asia, this shrimp is a selectively bred variant of Caridina species, admired for its bold, opaque red body and contrasting white markings. Highly sought after for nano and planted aquariums, the Red King Kong Shrimp adds both colour and activity to any aquascape while requiring stable water conditions and attentive care.
• Vibrant deep red and sometimes white
• Distinct white or translucent patterning depending on the strain
• Adult size ranges from 2.5–3.5 cm
• Peaceful and non-aggressive, compatible with other dwarf shrimp
• Active scavenger that helps maintain tank cleanliness
• Sensitive to water quality; requires stable, pristine conditions
A minimum aquarium of 20 litres is recommended for a small colony, though 40 litres or more provides optimal stability and growth potential. These shrimp thrive in densely planted aquariums with ample hiding spots and moderate water flow.
Due to their small size and peaceful nature, suitable tank mates are limited to non-predatory species. Ideal companions include:
Other Caridina shrimp species
Amano Shrimp
Small snails such as Nerite or Malaysian Trumpet Snails
Small peaceful fish like Pygmy Corydoras
Otocinclus Catfish
Red King Kong Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers. Their diet should include high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini, and occasional protein-rich foods like frozen daphnia or bloodworms. Providing biofilm-covered surfaces and driftwood encourages natural grazing and supports health and colour intensity.
Aquarium Filtration
Use gentle sponge or canister filtration to avoid shrimp being sucked into intake. Maintain excellent water quality with low nitrate levels and stable parameters.
Aquarium Plants
Include mosses such as Java Moss, Christmas Moss, or fine-leaved plants to provide grazing surfaces and hiding spots. Dense plant coverage supports molting and breeding behaviour.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate lighting encourages plant growth without stressing the shrimp. LED or fluorescent lighting for 8–10 hours daily is ideal.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain water temperatures between 22–26°C using a reliable heater. Stability is essential, as sudden changes can stress the shrimp.
Aquarium Substrate
Use a dark, fine-grain substrate designed for Caridina species. This helps stabilise pH, enhances coloration, and provides surfaces for biofilm growth.
Aquarium Decorations
Provide driftwood, rocks, and caves to create hiding spaces and territorial zones. Smooth surfaces prevent damage to the delicate exoskeleton and encourage natural foraging behaviour.
