Description

*This is a marine species*

Amblygobius palaena, commonly known as the Bullet Goby or Banded Sleeper Goby, is a peaceful, sand-sifting marine species native to the Indo-Pacific region. Found on sandy bottoms near coral reefs and lagoons, this goby is recognised for its utility in aquariums due to its constant substrate cleaning behaviour. With a torpedo-shaped body, subtle horizontal striping, and earthy tones of beige, grey, and soft green, Amblygobius palaena blends naturally into reef environments. Its functional behaviour and non-aggressive nature make it an excellent addition to both beginner and advanced marine aquariums.

Features of Amblygobius palaena

  • Grows up to 12–14 cm in length

  • Exhibits sand-sifting behaviour that aerates and cleans substrate

  • Possesses a peaceful temperament, suitable for community reef tanks

  • Often forms monogamous pairs in captivity

  • Spends most of its time near or on the substrate

The best aquarium size for Amblygobius palaena
A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended for a single Bullet Goby. For a mated pair, or for inclusion in a larger reef community, a system of 250 litres or more with ample open substrate is ideal. A wide footprint is more important than depth to accommodate natural foraging behaviour.

Tank Mate Compatibility for Amblygobius palaena

  • Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto)

  • Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)

  • Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica)

  • Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni)

  • Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)

Diet for Amblygobius palaena
This species is omnivorous, primarily feeding on microfauna, detritus, and organic material sifted from sand. In aquariums, supplement natural foraging with finely chopped frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and sinking carnivore pellets. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A mature sand bed rich in copepods and microinvertebrates is ideal to support natural feeding behaviour.

Aquarium Setup Amblygobius palaena

Aquarium Filtration
Use a high-efficiency filtration system, including a protein skimmer and biological media, to maintain clean, stable water conditions. The species contributes to cleanliness but is still sensitive to poor water quality.

Aquarium Plants
Marine macroalgae, such as Caulerpa or Halimeda, may be used in refugia but are not necessary in the display tank. Amblygobius palaena does not interact directly with plant life.

Aquarium Lighting
Moderate reef lighting is sufficient. The species is not photosynthetic, but consistent light cycles are beneficial, especially in reef tanks with coral and live rock.

Aquarium Heating
Maintain water temperature between 24–26°C using a stable, well-regulated heating system. Temperature stability is crucial for long-term health and feeding consistency.

Aquarium Substrate
A deep sand bed (minimum 5 cm) of fine-grain aragonite or reef-safe sand is essential for natural sifting behaviour. The substrate should be clean, free of sharp particles, and rich in microfauna.

Aquarium Decorations
Provide caves, rockwork, and PVC-style tunnels for retreat and shelter. Ensure open substrate areas are left unobstructed to encourage natural foraging. Compatible with corals and invertebrates, the Bullet Goby is reef-safe and non-destructive.
