The Peacock Cichlid – Sulphur Crest is a brilliantly coloured variant of the Aulonocara genus, endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. This striking cichlid is best known for its vibrant yellow dorsal crest, which contrasts beautifully with its metallic blue body. As with other Aulonocara species, the Sulphur Crest Peacock is relatively peaceful compared to other Malawi cichlids, making it ideal for semi-aggressive community aquariums with other haps and peacocks. Males display the most intense colouration, while females remain more subdued with silver-grey tones.
Features of Peacock Cichlid – Sulphur Crest
Reaches 12–15 cm in adult length
Males show intense blue bodies with a bright yellow "sulphur" dorsal crest
Females are silver to grey with faint markings
Lifespan of 6–8 years in well-maintained aquariums
Peaceful to semi-aggressive temperament

The best aquarium size for Peacock Cichlid – Sulphur Crest
A minimum of 200 litres is recommended for a single male with several females, allowing adequate space for territories and swimming. In mixed African cichlid setups, a larger aquarium (300 litres or more) helps diffuse aggression and allows for more complex social dynamics.

Diet for Peacock Cichlid – Sulphur Crest
This species is an omnivore with a preference for protein-rich diets. Feed high-quality cichlid pellets formulated for peacocks, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and occasional spirulina-based flakes. Avoid feeding too much animal protein (like beef heart), which can cause digestive issues.
Aquarium Setup Peacock Cichlid – Sulphur Crest
Aquarium Filtration
Strong, reliable filtration is essential. Use a canister or high-output internal filter that turns over at least 6–8 times the tank volume per hour. Peacock cichlids thrive in clean, oxygen-rich water.
Aquarium Plants
Live plants are not essential and are often uprooted or damaged. If desired, use hardy species like Anubias or Java Fern attached to rocks or driftwood. Artificial plants are a safer alternative.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate to bright lighting helps bring out the iridescent blue and yellow of males. Full-spectrum LED lighting is ideal for colour enhancement.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain a stable temperature between 24–27°C using a high-quality aquarium heater with thermostat control.
Aquarium Substrate
Fine sand is preferred to mimic the natural lakebed and allow for natural sifting behaviour. Avoid sharp or coarse substrates that may cause injury.
Aquarium Decorations
Create rocky structures, caves, and ledges using smooth stones or reef-safe rockwork. These provide territory markers and hiding spaces. Leave open swimming areas in the centre of the tank.
