Description

The Protomelas sp. “Eastern Steveni” is a striking haplochromine cichlid native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Known for its brilliant electric blue coloration and relatively peaceful temperament among other haplochromine cichlids, the Eastern Steveni is a highly sought-after species in the aquarium hobby. Males are particularly impressive, showcasing metallic blue to turquoise bodies with subtle vertical barring and flowing finnage, while females remain silver-grey with minimal patterning. This species does best in a well-structured, species-appropriate Malawi setup with stable water chemistry and plenty of swimming space.

Features of Protomelas Eastern Steveni

  • Males reach up to 18–20 cm; females slightly smaller

  • Males develop electric blue or turquoise hues with age

  • Lifespan ranges from 7 to 10 years in optimal conditions

  • Maternal mouthbrooders: females carry eggs and fry in their mouths

  • Mildly aggressive compared to other Malawi haps

  • Displays territorial behaviour, especially during breeding

  • Prefers open water with rocky structures nearby

The best aquarium size for Protomelas Eastern Steveni

A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended for a small group or a single male with multiple females. Larger aquariums (450+ litres) are ideal for community setups with other Malawi species, allowing enough territory and swimming room to minimise aggression.

Tank Mate Compatibility for Protomelas Eastern Steveni

  • Yellow Lab (Labidochromis caeruleus)

  • Red Empress

  • Copadichromis Borleyi

  • Synodontis Catfish

  • Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara species)

Diet for Protomelas Eastern Steveni

This species is omnivorous with a preference for a high-protein diet in captivity. Offer a base of high-quality cichlid pellets formulated for carnivorous haps, supplemented with frozen foods such as krill, brine shrimp, mysis, and chopped earthworms. Avoid feeding excessive amounts of fatty or meaty foods to prevent bloat. Spirulina-based flakes can be added to support colour and digestion.

Aquarium Setup Protomelas Eastern Steveni

Aquarium Filtration
Strong mechanical and biological filtration is essential. Use a high-capacity canister or sump system, ensuring a turnover of 6–8 times the tank volume per hour. Maintain pristine water to prevent stress and disease.

Aquarium Plants
Live plants are optional but often not essential. If used, choose hardy, rooted species like Anubias or Vallisneria, which can tolerate the digging behaviour of cichlids. Many aquarists opt for artificial plants to avoid uprooting.

Aquarium Lighting
Moderate to bright lighting brings out the intense colouration of mature males. Use full-spectrum LED lighting to highlight their metallic hues without promoting excessive algae growth.

Aquarium Heating
Maintain a stable temperature between 24–27°C. Use a high-quality heater with a protective guard and backup thermometer for consistency.

Aquarium Substrate
Use fine sand or smooth cichlid-safe gravel. Sand is preferred as it allows natural sifting behaviour and reduces the risk of injury.

Aquarium Decorations
Incorporate large rocks, caves, and hardscape structures to provide hiding spots, territorial boundaries, and visual interest. Leave open swimming areas in the centre of the tank. Avoid sharp decorations that may damage fins.
