Spotted Danios are also known as dwarf danio, dwarf spotted danio, spotted brown danio. They are hardy and ideal for beginner fish keepers. Danios are generally peaceful, but can become nippy if not kept in a large-enough school.

Features of Spotted Danio's:

  • The body is silvery in color and iridescent
  • A single bold dark stripe that runs from head to tail
  • Below the primary dark stripe is a number of small spots
  • Prefers temperatures between 24-28 degrees Celcius

The Best Aquarium Size:

The minimum tank size for Spotted Danios is 35L. You’ll likely need much larger tanks if you’re planning on introducing some tank mates and maybe even some live plants —usually, the bigger, the better.

Spotted Danio Diet:

Spotted danios are omnivores and are not fussy eaters. Danios will eat any food that floats on the waters surface. Feed danios flakes, floating pellets, and vegetables. We recommend supplementing the diet with live, frozen and freeze dried foods like daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp as a high-protein treat.

Tank Mate Compatibility:

Spotted danios are compatible with peaceful fish of a similar size. Avoid keeping with slow-swimming, long-finned fish because Spotted  Danios are known to be fin-nippers. Large, predatory tank mates will view Spotted Danios as food.

Aquarium Filtration for Danios

The Spotted danio likes to swim in medium to fast moving water. Good water flow can be created with use of good filtration systems. Cannister filters are a good option to create a generous amount of water flow.

Spotted danios thrive in a well-planted aquarium, especially where dense plants are located to the side and back. They will enjoy open swimming space in the forefront of the aquarium.
