Enclosure Size
Juveniles require a minimum enclosure size of 75 to 150 litres
Adults need at least 280 to 450 litres (90–120 cm long enclosure)
Provide more floor space than height; they are terrestrial and love to bask
Lighting and Heating
UVB lighting is essential (T5 HO linear tube, 10.0 or 12% UVB output) covering two-thirds of the enclosure
Basking area temperature: 35–43°C
Cool side of the enclosure: 24–29°C
Night temperature can drop safely to 18–24°C
Substrate
For juveniles, use non-loose substrates such as paper towel or reptile matting
Adults can be kept on tile, washed play sand, or a bioactive substrate with proper monitoring
Avoid fine loose substrate for young dragons to prevent impaction
Diet
Omnivorous: A mix of insects and fresh greens is essential
Juveniles should eat approximately 70% insects (crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms) and 30% vegetables
Adults require a diet of about 70% vegetables and 30% insects
Supplement insects with calcium powder (with and without vitamin D3) and a multivitamin weekly
Hydration
Always provide a shallow bowl of clean water
Mist occasionally and offer shallow warm baths once or twice a week, especially during shedding
Handling and Temperament
Leatherback bearded dragons are naturally calm and inquisitive. With regular, gentle handling, they often become very tame, making them one of the most rewarding reptiles to keep.
Lifespan
With proper care, Leatherback Bearded Dragons can live 10 to 15 years in captivity.
