The Green Tree Frog, also known as the Australian Green Tree Frog, is a calm, hardy, and beginner-friendly amphibian that's ideal for keepers of all experience levels. With its smooth green skin, big golden eyes, and relaxed personality, this frog has become one of the most popular pet amphibians worldwide.

Native to Australia and New Guinea, Green Tree Frogs thrive in warm, humid environments and are known for their charming behaviour and occasional vocal calls. They are nocturnal, but often active and visible during the day in captivity.

Key Features:

  • Calm and easy to care for — great for beginners

  • Grows up to 10–12 cm in length

  • Long lifespan: 10–15 years with proper care

  • Known for their adorable appearance and gentle nature

  • May vocalise, especially after misting or during humid weather

Enclosure Requirements:

  • Vertical enclosure preferred: minimum 45 x 45 x 60 cm for 1–2 adults

  • Provide plenty of climbing branches, plants, and hiding spots

  • Substrate: coconut fibre, sphagnum moss, or other moisture-retaining material

  • Maintain humidity at 50–70%, misting daily

  • Ideal temperature: 24–28°C during the day, with a slight drop at night

  • Use a low-level UVB light to support overall health and natural behaviour

  • Ensure good ventilation and access to clean, dechlorinated water in a shallow dish or water feature

Feeding:

  • Insectivorous: feed a variety of live insects such as crickets, wood roaches, and occasional worms

  • Dust prey with calcium (with D3) 2–3 times per week, and multivitamins once weekly

  • Juveniles may need feeding every day; adults can be fed every 2–3 days

Handling and Temperament:
Green Tree Frogs are generally tolerant of handling but should be touched minimally due to their sensitive, porous skin. Always wash your hands before and after contact, or use gloves. These frogs are best enjoyed as display animals with occasional gentle interaction.

Lifespan:
Typically 10–15 years in captivity, with some individuals living even longer under optimal care.

The Green Tree Frog is a charming, low-maintenance amphibian with a big personality. Whether you’re a first-time frog keeper or an experienced herp enthusiast, this friendly frog makes a fantastic addition to any tropical or rainforest-themed setup.
