The dwarf gourami is a peaceful and shy fish. If you have a pair of them, the two fish will often swim together. Dwarf Gourami's prefer a well planted tank, also with some floating plants. It has been selectively bred into various brightly coloured strains. They can sometimes be territorial to other male gourami's, so in a smaller tank it's recommended to keep a single male.

The most ideal tank mates for the Dwarf Gourami would be fish that dwell near the bottom of the tank. They are a peaceful species that do well in a community aquarium. If keeping multiple gourami's it is best to keep a ratio of 1 male to 2 females.

A filtration system is necessary for removal of waste and debris. Gourami's do not like fast or strong water flow. Opt for an aquarium filter suitable for your fish tank size that cleans effectively, but offers the ability to reduce flow. If water current is to strong, use sturdy aquarium plants and ornaments to create areas of reduced water current for refuge.

Ensure the lighting is subdued. Light is necessary for the photosynthesis required for the health and growth of all aquarium plants. LED aquarium lighting with dimmable functions enable to you set the appropriate lighting.

This fish enjoy temperatures between 23 - 27° C. If you are unable to maintain this temperature naturally, use an aquarium heater. Aquarium heaters also stabilize water temperatures. A thermometer is recommended to monitor the water temperature.

Gourami's prefer a planted aquarium to swim in and around the foliage, as well as floating plants that subdue intense lighting. Gourami's are known to eat plants, so you should add resilient plants with firmer leaves to the tank.

Decorations of personal preference can be used in aquarium with gourami's. Ensure there is structure for your Gourami's to hide and rest around that breaks up water flow. Rock and driftwood mimic natural environments, while resin ornaments add character and design to an aquarium.

Use sand or a dark, fine gravel for the tank’s substrate. If keeping a planted aquarium, consider the use of nutrient rich substrates such as aqua-soils.
