Africa: Lake Kyoga and Lake Nawampasa
Mouthbrooder, females incubate the eggs in their mouth until the fry are free-swimming. Easily bred and the fry are easy to raise.
Omnivorous. Eats all normal foods.
Males quite attractive when mature, with multi-coloured bodies. Females and juveniles boldly patterned with dark banding. Can be aggressive, particularly when breeding, so provide some hiding places. Tankmates should be of similar size and hardy nature. Probably extinct in Lake Kyoga after the introduction of Nile Perch.
