Astatotilapia burtoni, commonly referred to as Burton’s Mouthbrooder, is an African Cichlid originating from the shallow shorelines and estuarine zones of Lake Tanganyika and its surrounding river systems. Known for their dynamic social structures and vibrant colour displays, Astatotilapia burtoni has become a subject of scientific interest and is also valued by aquarists for its unique behavioural traits. Typically 10–12 cm in adult length
Males develop intense blue and yellow colouration with red fin edges
Females are smaller, with more subdued tones
Maternal mouthbrooder with complex parental care behaviour
Displays social hierarchy and dominant-submissive posturing
Lifespan of 5–7 years in a well-maintained aquarium
A minimum of 150 litres is recommended for a small group, though 200–250 litres is preferable for maintaining stable social dynamics. Horizontal swimming space and multiple hiding spots help reduce aggression and allow natural territorial behaviour.
