Ctenochromis horei is a striking African cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika, admired for its bold colouration, confident behaviour, and impressive presence. Adult males display vibrant red, orange, and blue tones that intensify during breeding, making this species a standout feature fish. Hardy and active, Ctenochromis horei is best suited to experienced aquarists with appropriately sized Tanganyikan setups.

• Native habitat: rocky shorelines and transitional rocky–sandy zones of Lake Tanganyika, Africa
• Maximum size: approximately 20–25 cm in length
• Lifespan: 8–12 years with proper aquarium care
• Temperament: semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding
• Colouration: males exhibit vivid red to orange bodies with blue facial markings; females are more subdued
• Behaviour: active mid-level swimmer; forms territories around rock structures
A minimum aquarium size of 350 litres is recommended for a single adult or breeding pair. Larger aquariums allow for stable water parameters, reduced aggression, and clearly defined territories. Long tanks with extensive rockwork and open swimming areas best reflect their natural environment.

Ctenochromis horei should be housed with other robust Tanganyikan species of similar size and temperament. Suitable tank mates include:
• Large Lamprologine cichlids
• Cyphotilapia frontosa
• Synodontis catfish
Avoid small, passive species or highly aggressive cichlids, as they may be stressed or harassed.
An omnivorous species with carnivorous tendencies, Ctenochromis horei thrives on a varied diet. Offer high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and brine shrimp. Occasional spirulina-based foods can be included to support digestion and colour. Feed once or twice daily in controlled portions.

Aquarium Filtration
Strong biological filtration is essential to maintain excellent water quality. Canister filters or large sponge filters are recommended due to the species’ size and activity level.
