Cyphotilapia Frontosa

The Cyphotilapia Frontosa, commonly known as Frontosa, is a stunning Lake Tanganyika cichlid recognised for its bold blue and white colouring, dark vertical stripes and impressive size. It is a calm but powerful fish that can become a real centrepiece in a large aquarium. Frontosa are best suited to experienced fish keepers who can provide plenty of space and the right tank mates.

Features of Cyphotilapia Frontosa

  • Striking blue, white and black striped pattern

  • Large, impressive body shape

  • Males develop a noticeable hump on the forehead as they mature

  • Generally calm compared with many large cichlids

  • Can grow to around 30–35 cm

  • Best kept in a group

The best aquarium size for Cyphotilapia Frontosa

A minimum aquarium size of 500 litres is recommended for a small group of Frontosa. A larger aquarium is strongly recommended as they grow, particularly when keeping several fish together. A tank at least 180 cm long provides much-needed swimming space and allows room for suitable rockwork.

Tank Mate Compatibility for Cyphotilapia Frontosa

Choose peaceful, similarly sized Lake Tanganyika fish that can handle the same water conditions.

  • Blue Dolphin Cichlid

  • Brichardi Cichlid

  • Calvus Cichlid

  • Julidochromis Cichlid

  • Leleupi Cichlid

Diet for Cyphotilapia Frontosa

Frontosa are not fussy eaters and will readily accept quality cichlid pellets and sinking foods. Their diet can be supplemented with frozen foods such as prawns and Mysis shrimp. Feed sensible portions once or twice a day and avoid overfeeding.

Aquarium Setup Cyphotilapia Frontosa

Aquarium Filtration

Use a powerful, reliable filter to keep the water clean and well oxygenated. Regular water changes are also important, particularly in larger groups.

Aquarium Plants

Plants are optional. Frontosa do not require a heavily planted aquarium, and sturdy plants are preferable if you choose to include them.

Aquarium Lighting

Moderate lighting is suitable. Avoid excessively bright lighting and provide shaded areas using rocks or decorations.

Aquarium Heating

Keep the aquarium between 24–27°C using a reliable aquarium heater.

Aquarium Substrate

Fine sand is an excellent choice and allows Frontosa to behave naturally while searching around the bottom of the aquarium.

Aquarium Decorations

Use smooth rocks to create caves, hiding areas and sheltered spaces. Secure larger rocks carefully, as Frontosa are strong fish. Leave plenty of open swimming space around the decorations.
