Endemic to the open waters and rocky drop-offs of Lake Tanganyika, Cyprichromis leptosoma “Jumbo Yellow Head” is a stunning schooling cichlid celebrated for its vibrant colouration and elegant, constant motion. This larger-growing variety of Cyprichromis leptosoma features shimmering blue bodies accented by bright yellow heads in dominant males, creating a striking visual contrast in the upper regions of the aquarium. Peaceful, social, and highly active, it is an exceptional choice for aquarists looking to add movement and colour to a Tanganyikan community setup.
• Native habitat: open water zones near rocky coastlines of Lake Tanganyika, Africa
• Maximum size: approximately 10–11 cm in length
• Lifespan: 8–10 years with proper care
• Temperament: very peaceful; ideal for community Tanganyikan aquariums
• Colouration: iridescent blue body with vivid yellow head (males), females more subdued
• Behaviour: mid to upper-level schooling fish; best kept in groups of 6 or more
A minimum of 250 litres is recommended for a small group, with larger aquariums (300–400 litres) strongly preferred to allow for natural schooling behaviour and male display dynamics. Length is more important than height, as these fish require open swimming space above rockwork.
This species is highly compatible with other peaceful Lake Tanganyika cichlids that occupy lower regions of the tank. Suitable tank mates include:
• Shell Dwellers (Neolamprologus multifasciatus)
• Calvus Cichlid (Altolamprologus calvus)
• Compressiceps Cichlid (Altolamprologus compressiceps)
• Regan’s Julie (Julidochromis regani)
• Brichardi Cichlid (Neolamprologus brichardi)
Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous species that may stress these gentle open-water swimmers.
A natural planktivore, this species thrives on small, high-quality foods. Offer fine cichlid pellets, crushed flakes, frozen or live baby brine shrimp, cyclops, and daphnia. Feed small amounts multiple times per day to mimic natural feeding behaviour and maintain optimal health.
Aquarium Filtration
Efficient filtration with strong biological capacity is essential to maintain pristine water quality. Canister filters are ideal, providing gentle flow without excessive turbulence.
Aquarium Plants
Plants are optional. If used, hardy species such as Anubias or Java Fern attached to rocks work best and preserve swimming space.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate to bright lighting enhances the iridescent blues and yellow hues, especially during male display.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain stable temperatures of 25–26°C using a reliable heater and thermometer.
Aquarium Substrate
Fine sand is recommended, complementing a natural Tanganyikan aesthetic.
Aquarium Decorations
Rock piles and vertical rock faces should be arranged toward the back and sides of the tank, leaving open water in the centre and upper areas for schooling and courtship displays—closely replicating their natural environment in Lake Tanganyika.
