Tank Mate Compatibility for Geophagus altifrons
This species is peaceful and can be housed with other non-aggressive fish of similar size, including:
Severums
Angelfish
Silver Dollars
Corydoras catfish
Larger tetras (e.g., Congo or Bleeding Heart)
Avoid overly aggressive or very small tank mates.
Diet for Geophagus altifrons
Omnivorous; feed a balanced diet of high-quality sinking cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Occasional vegetable matter is beneficial.
Aquarium Setup for Geophagus altifrons
Aquarium Filtration
Use strong and stable filtration to maintain excellent water quality. Canister filters or sump systems are recommended for large tanks.
Aquarium Plants
Plants can be included but must be hardy and well-rooted or potted, as Geophagus species constantly sift the substrate. Floating plants are a safe option.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate lighting is preferred. It highlights their iridescent colours without promoting excess algae or stress.
Aquarium Heating
Keep water temperature between 25°C and 28°C, consistent with Amazonian river conditions.
Aquarium Substrate
A fine sand substrate is essential to support their natural sifting behaviour. Gravel can damage their delicate gill structures and should be avoided.
Aquarium Decorations
Include driftwood, smooth stones, and open areas of sand. Create gentle flow zones with areas for resting. Avoid sharp objects, and ensure plenty of space for group dynamics.
