Madagascar Rainbowfish are an elegant and active freshwater species prized for their shimmering silver body, subtle blue-green tones and attractive yellow to orange fins. Native to Madagascar, these peaceful schooling fish bring constant movement and colour to a well-maintained community aquarium. Their social nature and impressive adult size make them particularly suited to spacious aquariums with plenty of open swimming room.
Native to freshwater habitats in Madagascar
Attractive silver body with blue-green iridescence
Yellow, orange and red tones can develop across the fins
Peaceful schooling species with active swimming behaviour
Can reach approximately 10–12 cm in length
Best maintained in groups of at least 6 specimens
Performs best in clean, well-oxygenated aquariums
A minimum aquarium size of 150 litres is recommended for a small group of Madagascar Rainbowfish. A longer aquarium is preferable, providing ample open swimming space for these active fish. Keeping a proper group helps reduce stress and encourages more natural schooling behaviour.
Madagascar Rainbowfish are peaceful community fish and can be housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Suitable tank mates include:
Congo Tetra
Pearl Gourami
Cherry Barb
Bristlenose Catfish
Harlequin Rasbora
Avoid very aggressive species or fish small enough to be viewed as prey.
Madagascar Rainbowfish are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet. Offer high-quality tropical flakes or small pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Regular feeding of quality foods rich in natural colour-enhancing nutrients can help maintain their vibrant appearance.
Use efficient mechanical and biological filtration to maintain clear, oxygen-rich water. Moderate water movement is beneficial and replicates the well-oxygenated conditions these active fish prefer.
Live plants provide shelter and security while leaving plenty of open swimming space. Use taller plants around the rear and sides of the aquarium to create a natural layout.
Moderate to bright lighting is suitable, particularly in planted aquariums. A consistent lighting schedule helps support natural behaviour and healthy plant growth.
Maintain a stable temperature of approximately 22–26°C. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations and ensure good circulation throughout the aquarium.
Fine gravel or sand is suitable for Madagascar Rainbowfish. A darker substrate can provide attractive contrast and help their subtle metallic colouration stand out.
Use driftwood, smooth rocks and aquatic plants to create structure while preserving generous open swimming areas. Avoid overcrowding the aquarium, as these active fish require space to move freely.
