Black Balloon Mollies are omnivorous, thriving on a mix of high-quality flake foods and vegetable matter. Their diet can include spirulina flakes, blanched spinach or zucchini, and occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp. Regular, small feedings help maintain health and water quality.
Gentle but effective filtration is essential, ensuring clean and well-oxygenated water. Sponge or hang-on-back filters with moderate flow are ideal for this species.
Live plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, or Hornwort provide shelter and grazing surfaces, enhancing natural behavior while maintaining open swimming areas.
Moderate lighting promotes plant growth and highlights the fish’s black coloration without causing stress.
Maintain stable temperatures between 18–26 °C with a reliable heater and accurate thermostat control.
Fine gravel or sand substrate supports foraging behavior and allows safe movement for bottom-dwelling companions.
Provide driftwood, rocks, and plant clusters for hiding spots while keeping open swimming areas for active movement and display.
