Red Cap Ranchu Goldfish are a highly sought-after fancy goldfish variety, recognised for their bright white body, vivid red head growth and distinctive rounded body shape. Their elegant appearance and peaceful temperament make them a popular choice for dedicated fancy goldfish aquariums. Like other Ranchu, they require excellent water quality, efficient filtration and ample swimming space to thrive.
Distinctive white body with vibrant red colouration across the head
Rounded body shape with a characteristic Ranchu back profile
Develops a prominent fleshy head growth known as a wen
Peaceful and generally compatible with other fancy goldfish
Can reach approximately 15–20 cm in length
Best suited to cool, well-oxygenated freshwater aquariums
Requires a balanced diet to support healthy growth and body development
A minimum aquarium size of 100 litres is recommended for a single adult Red Cap Ranchu, with an additional 50 litres per extra fish. A larger aquarium is preferable for maintaining multiple Ranchu, as it provides greater swimming space and helps maintain stable water quality. Avoid overcrowding, as goldfish produce considerable waste.
Red Cap Ranchu are peaceful fancy goldfish and should be housed with similarly slow-moving varieties. Suitable tank mates include:
Oranda Goldfish
Fantail Goldfish
Ryukin Goldfish
Black Moor Goldfish
Pearlscale Goldfish
Avoid housing Ranchu with fast-swimming common or comet goldfish, which can outcompete them for food.
Feed a high-quality sinking goldfish pellet as the staple diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Blanched vegetables can also be offered as part of a varied diet. Sinking foods are preferable as they reduce surface feeding and help limit excessive air intake.
Use efficient mechanical and biological filtration to manage goldfish waste while avoiding excessively strong currents.
Hardy live plants can provide enrichment and improve the aquarium environment. Choose robust varieties, as Ranchu may uproot or nibble softer plants.
Moderate aquarium lighting is suitable, with a consistent day and night cycle supporting natural behaviour and plant growth.
Red Cap Ranchu generally thrive at approximately 18–23°C. Stable temperatures are more important than maintaining a precise temperature.
Use fine, smooth gravel or sand without sharp edges to protect the Ranchu's delicate body and fins.
Choose smooth rocks, driftwood and ornaments without sharp edges. Keep open swimming areas clear and avoid overcrowding the aquarium with decorations.
