The Redfin Tiger Loach is a bold and energetic freshwater species known for its striking banded pattern and vibrant reddish fins. Originating from fast-flowing river systems in Southeast Asia, this loach is highly active, intelligent, and best suited to larger aquariums where its natural behaviours can be fully expressed. Its contrasting tiger-like markings combined with red highlights make it a standout feature fish in well-structured community or species-focused setups.
Distinct black vertical barring with vivid red fins
Highly active bottom-dwelling loach species
Grows to approximately 15–18 cm in captivity
Social and best kept in groups
Intelligent and interactive behaviour
Requires clean, well-oxygenated water
Peaceful with similarly sized non-aggressive fish
The Redfin Tiger Loach requires a spacious aquarium due to its active swimming and social nature. A minimum aquarium volume of 300 litres is recommended, with additional length preferred to accommodate fast movement along the bottom and mid-water zones.
Maintain water temperatures between 24–28 °C, a pH range of 6.5–7.5, and moderate water flow to replicate riverine conditions. Excellent oxygenation and stable water quality are essential for long-term health and vitality.
The Redfin Tiger Loach coexists well with peaceful to semi-active freshwater species of similar size, including:
Rainbowfish
Pearl Gourami
Harlequin Rasbora
Bristlenose Pleco
Congo Tetra
Avoid slow-moving fish with long fins or very small species that may become stressed by its constant activity.
The Redfin Tiger Loach is an omnivorous feeder that thrives on a varied diet. Offer high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and granules as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Including vegetable matter such as spirulina-based foods or blanched greens supports digestive health and balanced nutrition. Feed once or twice daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom where this species actively feeds.
Strong filtration with high oxygen exchange is essential. Canister filters combined with additional water movement help replicate natural river environments.
Hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, and Vallisneria work well, though planting should be secure due to the loach’s active digging behaviour.
Moderate lighting is ideal, supporting plant growth while not overwhelming this naturally shaded river species.
A stable heater should maintain temperatures between 24–28 °C, avoiding fluctuations that can stress the fish.
Fine sand or smooth gravel is preferred, allowing natural foraging behaviour without injury to delicate barbels.
Provide driftwood, smooth river rocks, and caves to create hiding places and break lines of sight. Open swimming lanes are essential to accommodate its constant movement and group interactions.
