Silver Dollar

The Silver Dollar is a popular freshwater fish known for its bright, silvery body, rounded shape and peaceful nature. These active schooling fish are always on the move and look fantastic in a group. They are a great choice for larger community aquariums and make an impressive feature fish without being aggressive towards their tank mates.

Features of Silver Dollar

  • Bright, silvery body with a rounded shape

  • Peaceful and active temperament

  • Can grow to around 15 cm

  • Best kept in groups of 5 or more

  • Hardy and relatively easy to care for

  • Excellent choice for larger community aquariums

The best aquarium size for Silver Dollar

A minimum aquarium size of 250 litres is recommended for a group of Silver Dollars. A longer aquarium is ideal, as these active fish need plenty of swimming space. For larger groups or fully grown fish, a 300–400 litre aquarium provides a more comfortable environment.

  • Angelfish

  • Pearl Gourami

  • Congo Tetra

  • Corydoras Catfish

  • Bristlenose Catfish

Diet for Silver Dollar

Silver Dollars are mainly plant eaters and should be offered a varied diet. Quality vegetable-based flakes or pellets can be used as their main food, along with spirulina foods and vegetables such as blanched zucchini, spinach and peas. Feed small amounts once or twice a day and remove any uneaten food.

Aquarium Setup Silver Dollar

Aquarium Filtration

Use a strong, reliable filter to keep the water clean. Silver Dollars are active fish and produce a reasonable amount of waste, so good filtration and regular water changes are important.

Aquarium Plants

Silver Dollars may eat soft-leaved plants, so choose hardy varieties such as Anubias or Java Fern. Alternatively, artificial plants can provide cover without becoming a snack.

Aquarium Lighting

Moderate lighting works well. Adding plants or shaded areas gives the fish somewhere to retreat when they want less light.

Aquarium Heating

Keep the aquarium between 24–28°C with a reliable aquarium heater.

Aquarium Substrate

Fine gravel or sand is suitable. Choose a substrate that is easy to maintain and safe for active swimming fish.

Aquarium Decorations

Use driftwood, smooth rocks and hardy plants around the sides and back of the aquarium. Leave plenty of open space in the centre for the group to swim.
