Due to their adult size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum aquarium size of 500 litres is recommended for Yellow Flagtail Prochilodus. Larger aquariums are strongly preferred, particularly when keeping multiple specimens. A long aquarium with substantial open swimming space is ideal for accommodating their constant activity.
Yellow Flagtail Prochilodus are generally peaceful and can be housed with other large, robust community fish. Suitable tank mates include:
Silver Dollar
Severum
Angelfish
Firemouth Cichlid
Clown Loach
Avoid very small fish, which may be vulnerable to accidental predation as the Prochilodus mature.
Yellow Flagtail Prochilodus are primarily herbivorous grazers. Provide a varied diet of quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods and sinking vegetable pellets. Supplement with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber and spinach. Regular access to natural algae and biofilm can also encourage their natural grazing behaviour.
Use powerful mechanical and biological filtration to manage their substantial waste production. Strong oxygenation and regular water changes are important for maintaining excellent water quality.
Hardy plants can be used, although softer plants may be grazed or disturbed. Robust species attached to rocks or driftwood are generally better choices.
Moderate lighting is suitable, with some shaded areas providing shelter and allowing fish to retreat from intense illumination.
Maintain a stable temperature of approximately 24–28°C. Avoid sudden temperature changes and ensure strong oxygenation at warmer temperatures.
Fine sand or smooth gravel is suitable and provides a natural-looking base for the aquarium. Avoid sharp substrates that could cause injury.
Use large pieces of driftwood, smooth rocks and robust decorations to create structure while retaining substantial open swimming areas. Ensure all decorations are securely positioned, as active Prochilodus can disturb loose objects.
