Description

Water Wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) is one of the easiest and most popular live aquarium plants, and a great choice for beginners. Its bright green, lacy leaves add soft texture and movement to planted tanks. It grows quickly, so it fills space fast and creates natural cover for fish.

As a fast-growing stem plant, it absorbs excess nutrients from the water. That can help compete with algae and support better water quality. Leaf shape varies with conditions: stronger light tends to produce finer, more deeply cut leaves.

Key Features

  • Beginner Friendly: Hardy and adaptable to a wide range of conditions
  • Fast Growing: Quickly fills the midground or background
  • Natural Cover: Gives fish, fry and shrimp places to shelter
  • Nutrient Uptake: Absorbs excess nutrients that could otherwise fuel algae
  • Low Light Tolerant: Grows well without CO₂ injection
  • Versatile Placement: Plant in the substrate, or let it float as a fast-growing cover plant

How to Use

  1. Remove any pot, rock wool or lead weight before planting.
  2. Plant the stems about 3–5 cm into the substrate, leaving a little space between each stem.
  3. Trim the tops once they reach the desired height, and replant the cuttings to grow a fuller patch.

Please note: Never release aquarium plants into waterways or drains. Dispose of trimmings in the bin or compost.
