Description

The Strombus luhuanus, commonly called the Strombus Snail, features shells in shades of brown, tan, green, and white, reaching up to 11cm in length. Ideal for mature aquariums with ample rock structures and a deep sand bed, they graze and stir the substrate. Naturally found in shallow waters with turtle grass, they require supplemental dried algae or vegetable pellets if algae is scarce. Sensitive to copper treatments and salinity changes, these snails forage during the day and rest at night. Their peaceful nature and reef compatibility make them suitable for beginner aquarists.

Note that individual specimens may vary in appearance from the image shown.

Features of Strombus luhuanus (Strawberry Conch)
• Attractive conical shell with vibrant reddish-pink and spotted patterns, shades of brown, tan, green, and white
• Grows up to 6–11 cm in shell length
• Active sand-sifter that helps aerate substrate and reduce detritus buildup
• Peaceful and reef-safe, does not harm corals or other invertebrates
• Unique leaping locomotion using a strong muscular foot
• Long eyestalks and operculum used for defence and burrowing
• Lifespan of up to 5 years with stable water conditions

The Best Aquarium Size for Strombus luhuanus
A minimum tank size of 80 litres is suitable for a single conch, though larger reef aquariums offer more feeding opportunities and space for natural behaviour. Best kept in tanks with mature sand beds and ample surface area for foraging.

Tank Mate Compatibility for Strombus luhuanus
This conch is highly peaceful and compatible with a wide range of reef-safe fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with aggressive hermit crabs or predatory fish. Suitable companions include:
• Clownfish
• Firefish
• Cleaner Shrimp
• Tangs
• Gobies

Diet for Strombus luhuanus
Primarily a detritivore and herbivore, this conch feeds on microalgae, diatoms, and organic material in the sand bed. In well-established reef tanks, supplemental feeding is rarely necessary. If food is scarce, offer:
• Algae wafers
• Spirulina-based pellets
• Blanched seaweed (nori)
Feed sparingly to maintain water quality and avoid overfeeding.

Aquarium Setup for Strombus luhuanus

Aquarium Filtration
Use high-quality biological and mechanical filtration to maintain pristine water conditions. Protein skimmers and refugiums help support a healthy, stable reef environment.

Aquarium Lighting
Moderate to strong reef lighting supports natural algae growth on surfaces and within the substrate, aiding in their natural feeding behaviour.

Aquarium Heating
Maintain water temperature between 24–27°C. Use a stable heater with a thermostat to avoid fluctuations.

Aquarium Substrate
Fine aragonite sand is ideal, as it allows for easy burrowing and natural feeding. Avoid coarse or sharp substrates that may damage the conch’s soft body.

Aquarium Decorations
Keep open sandy areas for movement and foraging. Live rock can be included for biodiversity, but avoid overcrowding the substrate with too many decorations.
