The Demekin Goldfish is a highly ornamental fancy goldfish variety instantly recognisable by its pronounced telescopic eyes and elegant, flowing finnage. Originating from long-established selective breeding traditions in Asia, this striking goldfish is prized for its graceful movement, metallic and calico colour variations, and distinctive silhouette. The Demekin is best appreciated in calm, well-maintained aquariums where its unique body form and slow swimming style can be fully showcased.
The Demekin Goldfish requires a spacious aquarium due to its adult size and heavy bio-load. A minimum aquarium volume of 150 litres is recommended for one fish, with an additional 50–75 litres per extra fish to ensure optimal water quality and swimming space.
Maintain water temperatures between 18–24 °C, a pH range of 7.0–8.0, and moderate hardness. Excellent filtration and stable conditions are essential for long-term health and prevention of eye or swim bladder issues.
The Demekin Goldfish is best housed with other slow-moving fancy goldfish varieties, including:
Avoid fast-swimming fish, fin-nippers, and tropical species that require different water temperatures or may outcompete them for food.
The Demekin Goldfish is an omnivorous species that thrives on a varied, high-quality diet. Offer sinking goldfish pellets or gel foods as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
Vegetable matter such as peas, spinach, and spirulina-based foods supports digestion and reduces the risk of swim bladder issues. Feed small portions 1–2 times daily, avoiding overfeeding to maintain water quality.
Strong filtration is essential due to the high waste output of fancy goldfish. Canister filters or oversized internal filters with high biological capacity are recommended.
Hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, and Elodea can be used, though plants should be well secured as Demekins may disturb soft planting substrates.
Moderate lighting enhances colouration while supporting plant growth in a controlled aquarium environment.
Heating is generally not required, but stable temperatures between 18–24 °C should be maintained without sudden fluctuations.
Smooth gravel or sand is ideal to prevent injury to delicate telescopic eyes and to allow safe foraging behaviour.
Use smooth, rounded decorations such as polished rocks, driftwood, and open swimming spaces. Avoid sharp or rough edges that could damage the eyes or fins of the Demekin Goldfish.
