Description

The Indonesian Datnoid (Datnioides microlepis), also known as the Indonesian Tiger Fish or Indo Datnoid, is a bold and predatory freshwater species admired for its striking black vertical bars across a golden to bronze body. Native to slow-moving rivers and estuaries of Sumatra and Borneo, this fish is highly sought after by experienced aquarists due to its commanding presence, strong personality, and potential for impressive size. Its territorial behaviour and dietary needs require a spacious, well-maintained aquarium with carefully chosen tank mates.

Features of the Indonesian Datnoid

  • Reaches up to 40 cm in length in captivity

  • Distinct vertical black bars on a metallic gold or bronze body

  • Laterally compressed, deep-bodied shape with a large, expressive eye

  • Territorial and semi-aggressive, especially toward smaller fish

  • Lifespan of 10–15 years with proper care

The best aquarium size for the Indonesian Datnoid
Juveniles can be temporarily housed in tanks of 250–300 litres, but adults require a minimum of 600 litres due to their size and territorial nature. A wide and long tank with ample floor space is essential for swimming and establishing dominance.

Tank Mate Compatibility for the Indonesian Datnoid
Tank mates must be robust, similar-sized fish that can hold their own without provoking aggression. Avoid small or delicate species that may be viewed as prey. Suitable companions include:

  • Silver Dollars

  • Bichirs

  • Clown Loaches

  • Oscars (with caution and enough space)

  • Fire Eel

Diet for the Indonesian Datnoid
Carnivorous and predatory by nature, this species thrives on a high-protein diet:

  • Live or frozen foods such as prawns, fish fillets, and bloodworms

  • Pellet-trained individuals can be fed high-quality carnivore pellets

  • Occasional live feeders (quarantine recommended)
Feed once or twice daily in moderation; overfeeding can lead to digestive issues.

Aquarium Setup Indonesian Datnoid

Aquarium Filtration
Strong, high-capacity filtration is required. Use external canister filters or sumps to maintain excellent water quality and handle high bioload. Moderate flow is acceptable but avoid turbulence.

Aquarium Plants
Live plants are not typically recommended due to the fish’s size and occasional destructive behaviour. If used, opt for hardy, anchored species like Java fern or Anubias tied to driftwood.

Aquarium Lighting
Moderate lighting is ideal. Excessively bright lighting can stress the fish and reduce their activity. Dim lighting helps enhance natural coloration and behaviour.

Aquarium Heating
Maintain water temperature between 26°C and 30°C. Use a high-quality heater with a guard to protect it from damage by this powerful fish.

Aquarium Substrate
Sand or smooth gravel substrate works best. This mimics their natural habitat and supports bottom-dwelling tank mates without risk of injury.

Aquarium Decorations
Use driftwood, large rocks, and sturdy structures to create territorial boundaries and visual barriers. Ensure all décor is stable and cannot be dislodged by this strong, inquisitive predator.
