Caridina wilkinsi Calman – CWC Shrimp
The Caridina wilkinsi Calman CWC Shrimp is a visually striking freshwater dwarf shrimp, highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its elegant colouration and peaceful nature. Originating from specialized breeding programs, this shrimp is a selectively cultivated variant of Caridina wilkinsi, known for its translucent body with subtle red or brown patterning and high-contrast markings. Its delicate appearance, active foraging behaviour, and compatibility with other small freshwater species make it a prized addition to planted and nano aquariums.
• Translucent body with subtle red or brown patterning
• Adults reach 2.5–3.5 cm in length
• Peaceful, non-aggressive behaviour
• Active scavenger that grazes on biofilm, algae, and detritus
• Sensitive to water quality; requires stable, pristine conditions
• Ideal for colony breeding due to social and schooling behaviour
A minimum aquarium of 20 litres is suitable for a small colony. A 40-litre or larger tank provides more stable water parameters, greater hiding spots, and sufficient space for breeding. Dense planting and moderate water flow improve overall shrimp health and activity.
This species is best kept with other small, peaceful species. Suitable tank mates include:
Other Caridina shrimp species
Amano Shrimp
Pygmy Corydoras
Nerite Snails
Otocinclus Catfish
CWC Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers. Their diet should include high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach, and occasional protein-rich treats like frozen daphnia or bloodworms. A well-established biofilm on rocks, driftwood, and plants provides natural grazing and supports colour development.
Aquarium Filtration
Gentle sponge or canister filters are recommended to avoid harming shrimp. Maintain stable, clean water with low nitrates and minimal fluctuations in parameters.
Aquarium Plants
Include fine-leaved plants and mosses such as Java Moss or Christmas Moss. Dense planting provides grazing surfaces, molting shelter, and breeding areas.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate lighting encourages plant growth and biofilm formation without stressing the shrimp. A consistent photoperiod of 8–10 hours daily is ideal.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain water temperatures between 22–26°C using a reliable heater. Stability is critical, as sudden temperature swings can cause stress or mortality.
Aquarium Substrate
Use a dark, fine-grain substrate designed for Caridina species. This enhances colouration, stabilizes pH, and encourages biofilm growth.
Aquarium Decorations
Provide driftwood, smooth stones, and hiding structures. These offer security during molting and natural surfaces for grazing, ensuring a healthy and active colony.
