The Cynotilapia afra “Cobue” is a vibrant and energetic dwarf mbuna cichlid native to the rocky shoreline of Cobue in Lake Malawi. Renowned for its striking coloration and bold personality, this species displays sexual dimorphism—males exhibit brilliant blue and black vertical barring, often with yellow in the fins, while females are more subdued in colour. A favourite among African cichlid keepers, the Cobue variant brings dynamic movement and intense colour to the aquarium.

Diet for Cynotilapia afra “Cobue”
Primarily herbivorous. Feed a high-quality spirulina-based flake or pellet. Supplement with blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. Avoid high-protein or fatty foods, as mbuna cichlids are prone to digestive issues like Malawi bloat.
Aquarium Setup for Cynotilapia afra “Cobue”
Aquarium Filtration
Strong, efficient filtration is essential due to their activity level and waste production. Aim for high oxygenation and stable water quality.
Aquarium Plants
Not essential and often uprooted or nibbled. If desired, use hardy varieties like Anubias or Java fern, secured to rocks.
Aquarium Lighting
Moderate to bright lighting enhances the males' iridescent colours.
Aquarium Heating
Maintain temperatures between 24°C and 27°C, replicating Lake Malawi's stable conditions.
Aquarium Substrate
Fine sand or crushed coral is ideal. The substrate helps maintain water hardness and mimics their natural lakebed.
Aquarium Decorations
Rock-heavy aquascape with caves, crevices, and hiding zones is essential. These structures reduce aggression and provide necessary territory for dominant and subordinate fish alike. Open swimming areas are also important for activity and display.
