The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey – B grade (Rocio octofasciata) is a vibrant morph of the classic Jack Dempsey, a popular American Cichlid originating from the slow-moving freshwater rivers and lakes of Central America. The “B grade” label typically refers to individuals with less intense colouration or minor aesthetic variations compared to A-grade specimens, though they still retain the species’ striking electric blue hues. Known for their semi-aggressive behaviour and territorial instincts, these cichlids are suited to intermediate to advanced aquarists.

Metallic blue iridescent scales across body and fins
Reaches up to 20 cm in length when fully mature
Flattened, oval body shape with strong jawline
Males may exhibit more intense colouring and extended finnage
Territorial, especially during breeding
Lifespan of 8–10 years under proper care
A single Electric Blue Jack Dempsey requires a minimum of 200 litres. A tank of 300–400 litres is preferable for pairs or if housing with other cichlids. A larger footprint helps reduce aggression and provides ample swimming space.
