The Samurai Gourami is a rare and highly sought-after freshwater labyrinth fish admired for its subtle beauty, intricate patterning, and calm, secretive nature. Native to the blackwater peat swamps of Southeast Asia, this species displays rich earthy tones with delicate banding and metallic highlights that become more pronounced in well-maintained aquariums. The Samurai Gourami is best suited to heavily planted, peaceful setups where its natural behaviours and unique coloration can be fully appreciated.
The Samurai Gourami thrives in stable freshwater aquariums with a minimum capacity of 60 litres. Densely planted aquariums with subdued lighting and minimal water flow provide the ideal environment for reducing stress and encouraging natural behaviour.
Maintain water temperatures between 24–28 °C, with a pH range of 4.5–6.8 and very soft water conditions. Excellent water quality and stable parameters are essential, as this species is sensitive to sudden environmental changes.
The Samurai Gourami is best housed with peaceful, non-aggressive species that thrive in similar soft-water conditions, including:
Avoid aggressive fish, highly active species, or larger tank mates that may intimidate this shy gourami.
The Samurai Gourami is an omnivorous micro-predator that benefits from a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods. Offer small foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, bloodworm, and mosquito larvae to encourage feeding response and maintain condition.
Frequent small feedings help support natural behaviour and improve overall health. A varied protein-rich diet also enhances coloration and breeding condition.
Gentle filtration with minimal current is ideal, maintaining clean water conditions without excessive water movement.
Dense planting with species such as Cryptocoryne, Java Fern, and floating plants helps create shaded areas and natural security.
Low to moderate lighting is preferred, especially in blackwater-style aquariums with floating plant coverage.
A reliable aquarium heater should maintain stable temperatures between 24–28 °C.
Dark sand or fine gravel substrates help replicate natural blackwater habitats and enhance the fish’s subtle coloration.
Incorporate driftwood, leaf litter, seed pods, and shaded hiding areas to create a calm, natural environment that encourages confidence and natural display behaviour.
