The Haplochromis nyererei, now often classified as Astatotilapia nyererei, is one of the most vividly coloured cichlids found in Lake Victoria. Males are renowned for their intense reds, oranges, and blues, especially during breeding, while females display more subdued silver or yellow tones. Named after Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, this species combines striking beauty with a moderately aggressive nature and is best suited for species-only or carefully planned African cichlid aquariums.

The Best Aquarium Size for Haplochromis nyererei

Other Haplochromine species
Aulonocara (Peacock Cichlids) in larger tanks
Rainbowfish (as mid- to upper-level dither fish)
Avoid housing with delicate, slow-moving, or long-finned fish.
