Description

The Labeotropheus fuelleborni is a robust and visually captivating cichlid species endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Known for its blunt head, muscular body, and striking colour variations—ranging from blue to orange blotched (OB) morphs—this species is a staple in many African cichlid aquariums. It is territorial but less aggressive than some other Mbuna species, making it suitable for well-structured community setups with other Lake Malawi cichlids.

Features of Labeotropheus fuelleborni

  • Reaches up to 15 cm in length

  • Deep-bodied, thick-set cichlid with a unique sloping forehead

  • Males display intense coloration, while females may exhibit OB (orange blotch) patterns

  • Omnivorous grazer with a preference for algae and plant matter

  • Territorial, especially during breeding, but typically manageable in well-stocked tanks

The Best Aquarium Size for Labeotropheus fuelleborni
A minimum aquarium size of 200 litres is recommended, especially if keeping multiple individuals or other Mbuna species. A larger footprint with plenty of rock formations helps establish territories and reduces aggression.

Tank Mate Compatibility for Labeotropheus fuelleborni
This species is compatible with similarly tempered Mbuna cichlids that can hold their own in territorial disputes. Suitable tank mates include:

Avoid mixing with overly aggressive species or delicate community fish.

Diet for Labeotropheus fuelleborni
A herbivorous diet is essential. Feed a mix of spirulina flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. Avoid protein-heavy or meaty foods to prevent digestive issues such as Malawi bloat.
