The Lethrinops genus includes several visually striking cichlids from Lake Malawi, and the Lethrinops Rainbow is among the most vibrant. Known for its iridescent colours and peaceful temperament compared to other Malawi cichlids, the Lethrinops Rainbow thrives in sandy-bottom environments and is ideal for experienced aquarists aiming to replicate biotope-accurate setups. Males display brilliant shades of blue, yellow, and red, especially during breeding periods, while females tend to be more muted in tone. Native to the deeper, sediment-rich zones of Lake Malawi, they are sand sifters by nature and require specific conditions to flourish.
Grows to approximately 15–18 cm in length
Males exhibit vibrant blue, red, and gold colouring
Females are typically silver with subtle markings
Peaceful for a haplochromine cichlid, best kept with non-aggressive species
Exhibits sand-sifting behaviour during feeding
Lifespan of 6 to 10 years under optimal conditions
A minimum of 300 litres is recommended for a small group. These cichlids need horizontal space for swimming and a sandy substrate to exhibit natural foraging behaviours. Larger aquariums also help prevent territorial stress during breeding.

Lethrinops Rainbow cichlids are omnivores with a preference for fine particulate foods. Offer a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based flakes, and occasional feedings of frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp or mysis shrimp. Avoid overfeeding protein-rich foods to reduce the risk of Malawi bloat.
