The Euchilus Cichlid, often referred to by hobbyists as Otopharynx lithobates “Z Rock” or simply “Lithobates Euchilus,” is a visually striking cichlid native to Lake Malawi. Valued for its intense coloration—typically a rich blue with electric highlights—it is a favourite among intermediate to advanced aquarists. Though peaceful by Malawi standards, the Euchilus is best kept in a carefully planned environment that mimics its natural rocky habitats.

Males display brilliant blue bodies with electric blue dorsal highlights and dark facial markings
Females are more subdued in colour, usually silvery-grey or brown
Adult size reaches up to 15 cm
Moderate temperament, less aggressive than many Mbuna
Males develop elongated dorsal and anal fins as they mature
Lifespan ranges from 8 to 10 years in captivity
Best kept in harems (1 male to 3–4 females) to manage aggression
A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended for a small colony. Larger tanks (400 litres and above) are ideal for multiple males or mixed species setups. Ample horizontal swimming space and vertical rock structures are essential for establishing territories and reducing stress.
