Polypterus delhezi, commonly referred to as the Barred Bichir or Armoured Bichir, is a captivating freshwater fish native to the Congo River Basin. Recognised for its bold vertical striping and prehistoric appearance, this species belongs to a lineage of primitive ray-finned fishes with lungs adapted for atmospheric breathing. Barred Bichirs are bottom-dwelling predators that exhibit nocturnal behaviour and require spacious, secure tanks with subdued lighting and appropriate tank mates.

Polypterus delhezi is a strict carnivore. Offer a varied diet of sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods such as shrimp, mussels, and bloodworms, as well as occasional live foods like earthworms or feeder shrimp. Avoid small tank mates that may be mistaken for food. Feeding is best done during dusk or nighttime when they are most active.

Aquarium Filtration
Use a powerful canister or sump system with moderate flow. Although hardy, the species produces significant waste, so strong biological and mechanical filtration is crucial.

Aquarium Decorations
Incorporate large caves, driftwood, and inert rocks to provide hiding spaces and territorial boundaries. Ensure decor is secure and cannot topple or trap the fish. Avoid sharp objects that could tear its sensitive skin.
