Metynnis hypsauchen, commonly known as the Striped Silver Dollar or simply Silver Dollar Fish, is a peaceful, laterally compressed freshwater species native to the Amazon and Paraguay river basins. Recognisable by its metallic silver sheen and distinct vertical striping, this shoaling herbivore is prized in large community aquariums for its calm temperament, active schooling behaviour, and striking appearance. Due to its adult size and appetite for plant matter, careful planning of tank size and aquascape is essential.

Aquarium Substrate
Use smooth gravel or fine sand. Neutral-toned substrates help replicate riverbed environments and reduce glare, promoting natural behaviour.
A variety of Substrates are available at Coburg Aquarium.
Aquarium Decorations
Add large driftwood, sturdy rocks, and open swimming zones. Ensure décor is stable and does not obstruct movement or schooling behaviour.
