Swordtail Koi Red and White (Kohaku) is an omnivore that benefits from a varied and balanced diet. Offer high-quality flake or small pellet foods as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Incorporating plant-based foods like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables supports digestion and colour vibrancy. Feed once or twice daily in controlled portions.
Moderate filtration is sufficient. A quality internal filter or hang-on-back system will maintain water clarity and biological stability.
Live plants are strongly recommended. Hardy species such as Java fern, Anubias, and Vallisneria provide cover and enhance the natural environment.
Moderate LED lighting is ideal, helping to enhance colouration while supporting plant growth.
Maintain a stable temperature between 22–26°C using a reliable aquarium heater.
Fine gravel or sand substrate is suitable, promoting plant growth and providing a natural look.
Incorporate driftwood, rocks, and dense planting areas to provide shelter while retaining open swimming zones.
Maintain pH between 7.0–8.0 and hardness between 8–20 dGH. Perform regular weekly water changes of 20–25% to ensure optimal water quality and long-term health.
