Breeds in Spring as water temperatures start to increase. Scatters adhesive eggs amongst plants, the adults will prey on the eggs and fry if they find them. First foods for the fry include freshwater plankton (in ponds), or fry foods such as Vinegar Eels and Fry powder food (if raising in tanks).
Omnivorous. Eats all normal foods, including aquatic plants.
Developed in Japan, Ryukin are similar to fantails, but they become much deeper bodied and often develop more intense colouration. Suitable for indoor tanks and outdoor garden ponds (but provide protection from predators if kept outdoors).
