Description

The Empire Gudgeon (Hypseleotris compressa) is a striking and robust freshwater fish native to Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea. Commonly found in slow-flowing rivers, creeks, estuaries, and billabongs, this species is well-suited to both freshwater and brackish environments. The male Empire Gudgeon is especially admired for its brilliant red-orange fins and iridescent blue-green body patterning, which becomes most vibrant during the breeding season. Hardy, adaptable, and peaceful, the Empire Gudgeon is an excellent addition to native community aquariums or species-specific setups.

Features of Gudgeon Empire Hypseleotris compressa

  • Reaches up to 10 cm in length

  • Males display vivid red fins and metallic green-blue body hues

  • Females are smaller and less colourful, with subtle brownish tones

  • Tolerates both freshwater and slightly brackish conditions

  • Lives up to 4 years in captivity

  • Mildly territorial, especially during breeding

  • Active mid-bottom dweller with inquisitive behaviour

The best aquarium size for Gudgeon Empire Hypseleotris compressa

A minimum tank size of 90 litres is recommended for a small group or pair. Empire Gudgeons are best kept in aquariums with horizontal swimming space, structured environments, and stable water quality. Larger tanks allow for natural interactions and reduce the likelihood of territorial stress among males.

Tank Mate Compatibility for Gudgeon Empire Hypseleotris compressa

  • Pacific Blue-Eye

  • Rainbowfish (e.g. Melanotaenia species)

  • Bristlenose Catfish

  • Firetail Gudgeon

  • White Cloud Mountain Minnow

Diet for Gudgeon Empire Hypseleotris compressa

Empire Gudgeons are omnivores with a preference for live and frozen foods. Offer a base diet of high-quality sinking pellets or soft micro-pellets, supplemented with brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and finely chopped earthworms. They will also graze on algae and biofilm. A varied diet enhances colouration, particularly in males.

Aquarium Setup Gudgeon Empire Hypseleotris compressa

Aquarium Filtration
Moderate filtration with gentle flow is ideal. Use sponge filters or canister systems with flow diffusers to maintain oxygenation while mimicking natural conditions.

Aquarium Plants
Provide dense planting along tank margins using species such as Vallisneria, Java Fern, or native Australian aquatic plants. Floating plants can offer cover and help diffuse lighting.

Aquarium Lighting
Moderate to bright lighting brings out the male’s colouration. Ensure shaded areas with plant cover to allow retreat from direct light.

Aquarium Heating
Keep water temperature between 22–28°C. This species adapts well to seasonal fluctuations but prefers stability during breeding.

Aquarium Substrate
Use fine sand or smooth river gravel to mimic natural riverbeds. A dark substrate enhances the visual contrast of their bright fin colouration.

Aquarium Decorations
Include driftwood, rocks, and submerged branches to establish territories and provide shelter. Ensure all hardscape materials are smooth and aquarium-safe.

Gudgeons

Recently I bought some empire gudgeons, quick delivery and fish in good condition. Doing really well, surviving on excess Endler guppy offspring while we were on holidays. Growing well!
