The Gidgee Skink is a hardy, social, and fascinating Australian reptile, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced reptile keepers. Known for its unique behaviour and strong family bonds, the Gidgee Skink (also called the Stump-Tailed Skink) is native to the arid regions of Australia and thrives in captivity when properly cared for. With its thick, spiny tail, robust body, and calm temperament, this skink is a standout addition to any reptile collection. Growing up to 40–45 centimetres in length, Gidgee Skinks are long-lived, low-maintenance reptiles that can become highly interactive with regular handling.
Housing Requirements for Gidgee Skinks
Adult Gidgee Skinks require a secure, well-ventilated enclosure of at least 120 to 150 litres. As a terrestrial species, they benefit from a setup with plenty of floor space, hides, and natural décor such as rocks and logs. Provide a basking area with temperatures of 32–36°C, along with a cooler end around 22–26°C to allow proper thermoregulation. UVB lighting is highly recommended to support calcium metabolism and overall health.
Gidgee Skink Diet
Gidgee Skinks are omnivorous and thrive on a balanced, varied diet. Offer a mix of leafy greens, vegetables, and occasional fruits, alongside protein sources such as insects (crickets, mealworms, wood roaches) and high-quality wet dog food. Calcium and vitamin supplements should be added regularly to support bone health. Avoid feeding toxic plants or excessive sugary fruits.
Care and Handling Tips
Gidgee Skinks are known for their docile nature and tolerance of handling when accustomed to human interaction. Regular, gentle handling helps build trust and reduces stress. Maintain a clean enclosure, provide fresh water at all times, and monitor temperature and humidity levels closely. These skinks are social animals and may even thrive in pairs or small groups when housed correctly, making them a unique and engaging reptile to keep.
