Description

More sensitive than most gourami's, Sparkling Gourami's prefer a well planted tank, also with some floating plants. Also known as the pygmy gourami and less commonly seen. They can sometimes be territorial to other male gourami's, so in a smaller tank it's recommended to keep a single male. Suitable for a nano tanks and is best kept in groups of 5-6.

Features of Sparkling Gourami:

  • Silver to light brown base body with dark lateral stipe and iridescent blue scales
  • Tail features blue iridescent spots
  • Can be heard to make audible croaking sounds
  • Slightly more sensitive to fluctuations in water parameters
  • They have an additional organ which they use to take in oxygen from the waters surface
  • They swim in the top and middle levels of the tank 
  • Grows to 4cm

The Best Aquarium Size for Sparkling Gourami's:

The minimum tank size for Sparkling gourami's is 35L. You’ll likely need much larger tanks if you’re planning on introducing some tank mates. They will spend most of their time in the top to middle layer of the water column but will retreat to the bottom of the aquarium to feed or if stressed.

Tank Mate Compatibility:

The most ideal tank mates for the Sparkling Gourami's would be fish that dwell near the bottom of the tank. They are generally a peaceful species, but try to not keep species that look similar in size and colouration as territorial aggression can occur.

Diet:

Sparkling Gourami's will accept all types of live, frozen, and dry foods. Feed flakes, and pellets, as well as frozen and live foods such as bloodworms, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

Aquarium Filtration for Sparkling Gourami's

filtration system is necessary for removal of waste and debris. Sparkling Gourami's do not like fast or strong water flow. In the wild, they are found in slow-moving black water with dense vegetation. Opt for an aquarium filter suitable for your fish tank size that cleans effectively, but offers the ability to reduce flow. If water current is to strong, use sturdy aquarium plants and ornaments to create areas of reduced water current for refuge.

Aquarium Heater for Sparkling Gourami's

This fish enjoy temperatures between 22 - 27° C. If you are unable to maintain this temperature naturally, use an aquarium heater. Aquarium heaters also stabilize water temperatures.  A thermometer is recommended to monitor the water temperature.
