Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora)
Hammer Corals are one of the most striking and recognisable LPS corals in the reef-keeping hobby, prized by Australian aquarists for their hammer- or anchor-shaped tentacle tips that sway gracefully in the current. Available in vibrant hues of green, gold, pink, and purple, these corals create a stunning visual contrast and add rhythmic movement to any saltwater aquarium. Hammer Corals are moderately hardy, making them suitable for aquarists with some reef experience who are looking to enhance their coral collection with a statement piece. Closely related to Torch and Frogspawn Corals, Hammer Corals share similar care requirements but are easily distinguished by their uniquely shaped polyps and dense branching growth patterns. With the right water quality and conditions, they can develop into large, captivating colonies that become the focal point of any reef tank.

Hammer Corals are semi-aggressive and can extend sweeper tentacles capable of stinging neighbouring corals, so allow ample space around them. They are compatible with most reef-safe fish such as clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and tangs. Avoid species known to nip at coral polyps, including some angelfish and butterflyfish, to prevent damage.
Hammer Corals thrive under moderate to high LED reef lighting that mimics natural sunlight on shallow reefs. Proper lighting enhances their vibrant colouration and promotes healthy skeletal growth. Acclimate new specimens gradually to stronger lighting to prevent bleaching or stress.
Provide moderate, indirect water movement that allows the coral’s tentacles to sway naturally without being exposed to strong, direct currents. Gentle flow promotes gas exchange, nutrient delivery, and waste removal, helping maintain polyp health and extension.
Hammer Corals do best in medium to large marine aquariums. Place them in the mid to lower areas of the tank with plenty of space for expansion and growth. Maintaining stable reef tank parameters and consistent care will keep your Hammer Coral healthy and thriving for years to come.
