Australian Hopping Mouse – A Unique and Energetic Pocket Pet

The Australian Hopping Mouse is a small, nocturnal rodent native to arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. Known for their long hind legs and kangaroo-like hopping, these mice are active, intelligent, and incredibly entertaining to watch. Their compact size and inquisitive behaviour make them ideal for those looking for an alternative to traditional small pets like hamsters or gerbils. With proper care, Hopping Mice can live up to 4 years in captivity and thrive in small social groups.

Housing

Hopping Mice require a spacious, escape-proof enclosure with solid walls and a secure lid. A minimum of 90 × 45 × 45 cm is recommended for a pair or small group. Provide deep substrate (10–15 cm) for burrowing, with a mix of sand, soil, and shredded paper. Include hides, tunnels, and enrichment items like climbing branches and wheels.

Diet

Australian Hopping Mice are omnivores. Their diet should include a high-quality rodent mix, supplemented with seeds, insects (like mealworms or crickets), and small amounts of fresh vegetables and fruits. Avoid sugary or processed foods. Fresh water must always be available via a water bottle or shallow dish.

Handling and Care

These mice are shy but curious and can become tame with gentle, regular interaction. Avoid handling during daylight hours, as they are nocturnal and easily stressed when disturbed while resting. Spot-clean daily and perform a full enclosure clean every 1–2 weeks. Monitor for signs of illness such as lethargy, weight loss, or abnormal droppings.
