Red Tail Goodeid are also known as Redtail Splitfin's and are live bearers (meaning they bear live young). They are native to Mexico, Central America. A lively fish, this species is a voracious eater and hardy in nature, perfect for the beginner aquarist.

Red Tail Goodeid prefer to swim in groups of 6 or more with a higher ratio of females to males. They are suitable for tropical community aquariums with other robust species of similar size. Avoid smaller & slower species, as they will out compete others for food. Also avoid fish with flowing fins, as they are known to be fin nippers.

Diet:

Red Tail Goodeid's are omnivore's, but prefer a high protein diet. They are not fussy eaters and will eat almost anything. Feed a good quality tropical flake, pellet, or granule, and supplement the diet with live, frozen or freeze dried foods such as blackworms, brine shrimp and tubifex worms. They will nibble at soft aquarium plants in the aquarium and will enjoy spirulina based pellets and wafers. Red Tail Goodeid are healthiest with a varied diet.

They are active and energetic swimmers that will use all levels of the water column, but primarily the middle and top. They require a generous amount of swimming space, we recommend a minimum aquarium size of 120 litres for a small group of Red Tail Goodeid's.

A good filtration system is necessary as they are voracious eaters and are a moderate waster producer. Red Tail Goodeid will tolerate lower water quality, but it is advised to maintain a clean aquarium. They enjoy a moderate flow rate. Ensure your filter has an adequate flow rate to effectively remove waste from the aquarium.

This fish enjoy temperatures between 18-27° C. If you are unable to maintain this temperature naturally, use an aquarium heater. Aquarium heaters also stabilize water temperatures.  A thermometer is recommended to monitor the water temperature.
