Jungle Perch are robust Australian native freshwater fish known for their attractive markings, active behaviour and predatory feeding habits. Found across coastal waterways of northern and eastern Australia, Jungle Perch are a fascinating choice for experienced aquarists with suitably large aquariums. Their streamlined body and strong swimming ability make them an impressive feature fish, particularly in spacious native or biotope-style setups.
Australian native freshwater fish with a streamlined, powerful body
Attractive silver to golden colouration with darker markings
Active and confident swimming behaviour
Predatory species that feeds on smaller aquatic animals
Can grow to approximately 50–60 cm in length
Best suited to experienced aquarists with large aquariums
Requires excellent filtration and consistently high water quality
Due to their substantial adult size and active swimming behaviour, Jungle Perch require a large aquarium. A minimum aquarium size of 600 litres is recommended for smaller specimens, with substantially larger systems required as they approach adult size. A long aquarium with extensive open swimming space is essential for supporting healthy growth and natural behaviour.
Jungle Perch are predatory and should only be housed with fish that are too large to be swallowed and can tolerate similar water conditions. Suitable tank mates may include:
Barramundi
Australian Bass
Saratoga
Silver Perch
Golden Perch
Carefully monitor compatibility, as individual fish can vary in temperament and predatory behaviour.
Jungle Perch are carnivorous predators and should receive a varied, protein-rich diet. Suitable foods include quality carnivorous pellets, prawns, earthworms and appropriately sized frozen foods. Feed according to the fish's size and activity level, avoiding excessive feeding that can compromise water quality.
Powerful mechanical and biological filtration is essential due to their size and substantial waste production. Strong oxygenation and regular water changes should be maintained.
Hardy aquatic plants can be incorporated where appropriate, although Jungle Perch benefit more from open swimming space than densely planted layouts.
Moderate lighting is suitable, with shaded areas created using plants, wood or other aquarium structures.
Maintain a stable temperature of approximately 20–26°C, depending on the fish's origin and seasonal requirements. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations.
Fine sand or smooth gravel provides a practical and natural-looking substrate. Avoid sharp materials that could damage the fish.
Use sturdy driftwood, large smooth rocks and secure decorations to create structure without restricting swimming space. Leave generous open areas for active swimming and ensure all heavy decorations are firmly positioned.
