The Five-Stripe Wrasse is a vibrant marine fish native to the Indo-Pacific, admired for its five bold horizontal stripes running along its elongated body. Its striking coloration and active, agile swimming behavior make it a visually engaging addition to reef aquariums. Generally peaceful but semi-territorial, it requires a well-structured environment with ample hiding spaces and open swimming areas, making it suitable for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists.
Elongated body with five distinct horizontal stripes, often in red, blue, or green tones
Adult size typically reaches 10–12 cm
Active mid- to upper-water swimmer
Semi-peaceful; may display mild territorial behavior if space is limited
Reef-safe, but small invertebrates may be at risk
Lifespan of 4–6 years under optimal conditions
A minimum aquarium volume of 150 litres is recommended for a single individual. Larger tanks of 250 litres or more are ideal for mixed-species setups or multiple wrasses. A tank length of 100–120 cm provides sufficient horizontal swimming space to reduce territorial stress and support natural behavior.
Suitable companions are peaceful, similarly sized reef-safe species:
Clownfish
Gobies
Blennies
Dottybacks
Small Tangs
The Five-Stripe Wrasse is carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates in the wild. In aquariums, it accepts high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding 1–2 times daily in small portions ensures healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and stable water quality.
Efficient mechanical and biological filtration is essential. Protein skimmers and live rock maintain water quality and provide natural grazing surfaces.
While optional, macroalgae can support grazing. Live rock formations are essential for hiding, establishing territories, and creating a natural reef environment.
Moderate to strong lighting enhances coloration and encourages biofilm and algae growth for natural feeding opportunities. Adjustable LED reef lights are ideal.
Maintain stable tropical marine temperatures between 24–27 °C using a reliable heater with accurate thermostat control.
Fine sand or crushed coral substrate supports natural foraging and darting behavior while complementing the reef environment.
Live rock, coral fragments, and crevices provide shelter, territorial boundaries, and exploration zones. Open swimming areas are important for the wrasse’s active and agile movements.
